Why a New Tool to Create Game Cards and Flashcards?

Why a New Tool to Create Game Cards and Flashcards?

Why We Decided to Build a New Game Card Creator Tool

We like card and board games—not only playing them, but also creating our own. We use cards to teach kids languages, and they are a great way to spend quality time with family and friends, or even alone—to play or learn something new, like new words.

However, creating cards for games or flashcards for language learning is still not the easiest thing today. There are many tools you can combine to create your own card deck—you can even use Canva or Figma. But we wanted to simplify the entire process of designing and producing cards so that even kids could create their own games (based on templates).

That’s why we decided to build our own card game creator.

Here, you will see our progress, behind-the-scenes updates, advice, and guides around card and board games and flashcards. Today, I would like to talk about the limitations of existing tools and why we think a new one is needed.

The Problem with Existing Tools

1. Limited Customization

Many existing card creators rely on rigid templates. While templates are helpful for beginners, they quickly become a limitation when you want to do something even slightly unconventional.

You often cannot freely move elements, create different card shapes or layouts for different card types, or properly preview all cards after making changes.

2. Poor Scalability

Designing one card is easy—you can do it in almost any graphics editor like Canva or Figma. But designing 50—or 500—cards becomes a real challenge.

Most tools do not support data-driven card generation, which makes scaling card decks time-consuming and repetitive.

3. Lack of Collaboration Features

Most card creation tools do not support real-time collaboration, version history, or easy sharing of working prototypes. This makes feedback collection and iteration slow and inefficient.

4. Export Limitations

Another common issue is poor export quality, especially when preparing cards for printing. Low-resolution exports or limited file format options often cause problems in production.

What We’re Building

It’s simple: we are building a tool we would personally want to use.

We didn’t start this project just to sell it, but of course, to continue working on it full-time, we need to make it sustainable. That’s why the tool will be affordable, with two pricing options:

  • free to create up to 50 cards
  • €25/year subscription

The tool will include two main components for creating game cards:

  • A visual editor with templates
  • A data-driven deck editor

This will allow you to design cards, add structured data to them, and test how they look and behave in real use.
